Matt is awesome, I've been taking lessons for 19 months and I've learned so many great songs. When I ask Matt to teach me one of my favourite songs, he always figures it out and teaches me how to play it. He's even taught me so much that I can learn songs on my own. I always look forward to my lessons! Grace (age 11)

I started going to lessons with Matt just over a year ago. I look forward to my lessons each week with him and have really enjoyed the progress that he’s helped me to achieve. His style of teaching is very patient, approachable, and intuitive. Matt is great because he tailors his lessons to your skill level, style of learning, and musical taste. He is very knowledgeable, talented, and is very passionate about what he does. Highly recommend!

At 70 it seemed a good time to learn to play this guitar. Matt has blended theory, bad habit breaking exercises, humour and support to help me work towards my goals. And he has incorporated my questions and ideas into our sessions. The lessons are a cooperative venture which I think creates a positive learning environment.

I decided to start playing the guitar again a little over a year ago. After researching Vancouver area guitar instructors I booked a trial lesson with Matt. The one lesson was enough for me to decide that he was the instructor for me. Matt is enthusiastic and patient. He thoroughly explains theory and concepts. He very quickly analyzes the areas where I've struggled and provides helpful tips. If Matt wasn't teaching guitar, he would likely be teaching something because he is a natural teacher. If my first guitar instructor had been Matt, I probably wouldn't have stopped playing years ago.

I've been playing guitar off-and-on for about 20 years, and was completely self-taught. I gave up for a long, long time b/c I hit a ceiling which I did not know how to break through. I gave up. Recently, I thought I'd take formal instructions and get on with actually learning the guitar. I found Matt's site and sent him a rather long, rambling email explaining my situation, the styles/bands I liked, and he said it wouldnt be a problem. In fact, we have very similar personal tastes, which I thought would help the match b/t teacher and student. I went for my first, free lesson and haven't looked back. I've been with Matt about 2/3rds of a year now, and have no intention of stopping. To be honest, I'm married to a teacher, and have done extensive teaching myself throughout my life, and I can honestly say, Matt is one of the best teachers I have *ever* come across in my life, guitar or not. I simply cannot stress that enough. I honestly marvel at how good of a teacher he actually is. Matt's knowledge of styles and theory is outstanding, but more importantly, he has a short and long-term vision and concrete plan for each student. He has an innate feel for knowing when to push you hard and when to dial back. He knows the kind of feedback and constructive criticism each student needs. I say this as I usually show up early for my time slot and have listened to him with other students. Matt is both approachable and accessible, and also genuine. There's no ego. He's never condescending. As I am growing in my studies with him, I constantly hit him with questions about theory and gear, and he always takes the time to answer and give thoughtful replies. I really cant say enough good things about Matt's teaching. It really is second-to-none.
